Sunday, July 26, 2009 — Back on Aug. 31, 1992, local author Fred T. Morgan was scheduled to sign his new book, “Haunted Uwharries,” for five hours at Fagan’s Book Shop in downtown Albemarle.
Long before the five hours had run out, Mrs. Fagan’s supply of books had run out, leaving customers, the author and Mrs. Fagan frustrated.
She immediately ordered a new and larger inventory and scheduled another book signing for Sept. 14.
After being out of print, “Haunted Uwharries” is back — its third printing. Originally published by Jerry Bledsoe’s Down Home Press, the new edition was released by Morgan’s current publisher, Bandit Books of Winston-Salem. Bandit Books also published Morgan’s “The Revolt” in 2004 and the immensely successful “Uwharrie Bizarres” in 2007.
This book is unique in Morgan’s Uwharries series in that it consists of three distinct categories: Ghost Stories (19 of them), four Witch Tales and 12 stories of Strange Happenings. Some would say that many of Morgan’s stories are about “strange happenings.”
Morgan is the author of eight books, seven of them in the Uwharries series. “Haunted Uwharries” is the third in the series behind “Ghost Tales of the Uwharries” and “Uwharrie Magic.”
Deidre Parker Smith of the Salisbury Post, reviewing “Haunted Uwharries” when it was first published in 1992, said: “Morgan spins a pretty good yarn. Pull up a campfire and read them out loud for best effect.”
Book reviewers near and far have praised Morgan and his books.
One reviewer said: “Fred is a master storyteller ... probably the William Faulkner of the Uwharries.”
Another referred to him as “the Ghostmaster General of the Uwharries.”
Last year “Our State Magazine” said: “Morgan is not only a teller of stories from the Uwharrie Mountains; in many ways, he has become the Uwharries story of his own.”
The author is a Stanly County native who was feature editor for The Stanly News & Press for 34 years. He also served as public information officer for Stanly County Schools and did a variety of freelance and other journalistic work for such companies as Ford Motor Company and Alcoa.
Morgan’s books are available at The Stanly News & Press and other locations in Stanly County.
His books also can be ordered directly from the distributor: John F. Blair, Publisher, 1406 Plaza Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, phone 1-800-222-9796 or from any book dealer. Retail price is $12.95.
