Enrollment extended for new SCC program

Thursday, July 9, 2009 — JobsNOW “12 in 6” is the central theme of a plan for the North Carolina Com-munity College System (NCCCS). This plan will address the workforce challenges related to ensuring that enough workers are trained with the right skills for the current economy. The goal of the “12 in 6” initiative supports training activities that can be completed in less than six months, lead to recognized credentials, are affordable, and have flexible hours.

JobsNOW “12 in 6” is a collaborative effort between the North Carolina Depart-ment of Commerce, Division of Workforce Development, Centralina Workforce Development Board, and the North Carolina Community College System. This program is subsidized under the Workforce Investment Act through funds by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Stanly Community College (SCC) is excited to be offering some of the “12 in 6” training programs. These include: Masonry (training begins July 14); Geriatric Aide, Healthcare Billing and Coding, Heavy Equipment Operator, and Welding, (training begins Fall 2009); Energy Auditor, Healthcare Informatics, and HVAC Industrial Systems, (training begins Spring 2010); and Pharmacy Technician (training begins Summer 2010).

The first training program to be offered in the “12 in 6” program will be Masonry. Topics covered for this training program will be: job estimates/safety/layout, reading blueprints, preparing/mixing mortar, laying bricks and blocks, job seeking and keeping skills, applied mathematics, and reading/locating information.

Masonry classes meet at West Stanly High School, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-11 a.m. and 12-3 p.m. (96 total hours for masonry).

Other classes involving job skills, blueprint reading, reading, and math skills will follow on a different schedule.

Financial assistance may be available for unemployed individuals.
