Sunday, July 5, 2009 — Residents have a fun new way to show Stanly County Farmers Market some love — and help this farmers market win $5,000 through an online contest.
The “Love Your Farmers’ Market” contest, sponsored by Care2.com and Local Harvest.org, will award the voters’ favorite farmers’ market the grand prize, which will help the Stanly County Farmers Market support local family farmers and provide the county with locally grown food.
Care2 (www.care2.com), the largest online community of people passionate about making a difference, is teaming up with LocalHarvest, a Web site that finds food grown close to home, to bring public awareness to the need to support family farms, fresh healthy food and the farmers markets that connect these farms and food to communities.
In addition to the grand prize, Care2 is awarding $3,000, $2,000 and two prizes of $1,000 to the four runner-ups respectively.
Local residents and market supporters will determine the winners of this contest and can vote for Stanly County Farmers Market by going to www.care2.com/farmersmarket/28748.
“Five thousand dollars would make a huge impact on the kinds of support we can offer to farmers and outreach we can do to the community,” said Vicki Coggins, executive director of Albe-marle Downtown Develop-ment Corporation.
“We encourage all of our neighbors and customers to visit the contest Web site and vote for us.”
How The
Contest Works
Care2 and LocalHarvest are committed to ensuring that every farmers market, no matter how small, has an opportunity to win a much-needed prize.
In addition to the grand prize of $5,000, Care2 is sponsoring a weekly prize of $250 for a participating market chosen at random (not based on votes) for the duration of the contest. Care2 will also award a total of $7,000 to the four runners-up in the contest. In total, Care2 will give away more than $15,000 in cash to farmers markets across the country.
During Care2 and LocalHarvest’s “Love Your Farmers Market” contest, people can vote for their favorite farmers market to help them win. Voting is free and everyone can help with the click of a mouse.
Through the contest Web site (www.care2.com/farmersmarket/) people also can invite their friends to vote for their favorite market. Visitors can track who has recruited the most friends to vote for their favorite market. The top 10 people who recruit the most friends to vote will each receive a $50 prize and a free Care2 organic cotton tote bag that they can use at the farmers market.
From June 19 to Sept. 17, individuals across the country will be able to visit www.care2.com/farmersmarket to vote and show their farmers market some love.
