Fitzgibbons celebrates 25 years as Catholic priest

Thursday, July 2, 2009 — Father Peter Fitzgibbons, pastor of Annunciation Catholic Church, celebrated a quarter century of service as a Catholic priest at a special dinner held in his honor. The affair was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, Council 10495, Daughters of Mary and the Forever Young Club.

A capacity crowd of parishioners and friends filled the church’s fellowship hall to enjoy Fitzgibbons’ favorite cuisine, pizza and pasta. The Daughters of Mary marked the occasion by presenting him with an engraved wrist watch. An elegantly decorated chocolate cake with white icing topped off the occasion.

Fitzgibbons and his twin brother were born in Natick, Mass., on July 11, 1953. He distinguished himself as a youth by becoming an Eagle Scout. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Providence College and attending Saint John’s Seminary, he was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Charlotte on June 9, 1984.

In addition to serving a variety of assignments as a priest, Fitzgibbons has completed more than 20 years as an U.S. Army chaplain.

His military career has encompassed tours during the Persian Gulf War and Iraqi Freedom. In spite of being a bad bowler and worse golfer, he continues to serve his country in the Army Reserves as a chaplain with the 320 Medical Company in Greensboro.
