Thursday, July 2, 2009 — The North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) will incur an increase in tuition rates by 19 percent.
The tuition increase was included in the recent Senate Bill 311 that was put forth by Gov. Perdue.
For Stanly Community College (SCC) curriculum students seeking degree or transfer credits, the new in-state rate will be $50 per credit hour. The out-of-state tuition rate will be $241.30 per credit hour.
For continuing education students seeking non-transfer or enrichment courses, the new rate will be as follows:
1-24 hours/$65;
25-50 hours/$120; and
51+ hours/$175.
Colleges are authorized to begin charging this new rate effective July 1, 2009, for Fall semester courses.
“While we don't like to see tuition increase, community colleges are still a great educational bargain for NC citizens,” SCC President Dr. Michael Taylor said.
“This increase goes towards supporting the community college budget and especially in this economic environment, we either get more budget support or we must cut our services.”
Over the past several years, SCC has witnessed an increase in full time enrollment.
“We do not want any student not to enroll because of the tuition increase. There are a number of scholarships and other financial support opportunities available,” Taylor said.
“We encourage students to contact the financial aid office to seek assistance if finances are an issue.”
