Tuesday, June 30, 2009 — Greenbriar Designs in Troy, an upscale collection of custom upholstered furniture for children scaled for ages 1 through 10, announced the availability of its upholstered furniture, headboards and fabric online via its new Web site, greenbriardesignsnc.com.
A strong supporter of North Carolina craftsmen, Greenbriar Designs strives to provide heirloom-quality products at a lower cost than alternative children’s furniture purveyors.
After getting his doctorate in English, Ken Walker served as a school superintendent in Virginia before retiring and later reprising his role as a Methodist minister in a small North Carolina town.
Classically trained in fine art and art history, Sheena Walker spent years as a freelance graphic artist and high school art teacher before starting her own interior design business and eventually retiring.
At 72 and 67 years old respectively, they do not sound like the typical start-up business owners. However, in true entrepreneurial fashion, this duo recently launched their own niche business, Greenbriar Designs. Their collection of upholstered furniture, headboards and fabric is now available to order online.
While designing a children’s room for a client, Sheena had trouble finding upscale children’s furniture that she felt not only had great design aspects, but was also durable and a piece that could be handed down for years to come.
Looking to offer an alternative to chain store foam children’s furniture, Sheena and her husband, Ken, had the desire to come out of retirement and pursue Sheena’s dream with Greendesign Designs.
Supporting local North Carolina merchants and craftsmen, Greenbriar Designs uses hardwood for the framing, extra foam cushion for comfort, and the best grades of fabrics for upholstering.
“The current economy is not ideal for starting a new business, not to mention during our ‘golden years’ when most travel or relax,” said Sheena Walker, co-founder, Greenbriar Designs.
“It just proves our commitment and dedication to providing an alternative for children’s interior design. We stand behind the products we deliver, and our passion reflects in the attention to detail and level of customer service Greenbriar provides.”
