School board receives update on budget, technology issues

Tuesday, June 30, 2009 — A special called meeting of the Stanly County Board of Education brought forth some small but important budget matters, and also offered a review of the system’s technology use.

Budget amendments dealing with the More at Four program, a dropout prevention grant, the school food service’s Medicaid reimbursement, charter school payments, board scholarships, guidance, transportation, regular curricular and social work services, replacement of school buses and food service assistant’s salaries were presented by Bill Josey, director of finance and auxiliary services, to the board and all were approved.

Board members also approved the continuing budget resolution for the next fiscal year. However, the budget is not yet set into stone because of the status of the state’s budget, in which Josey reminded those in attendance had not been finalized.

Dr. Samuel DePaul, superintendent, took the opportunity to speak concerning the state making a budget decision. He had spoken with Rep. Justin Burr earlier in the day and relayed that he hopes a budget will surface in the next three to four weeks.

Brandon DeLeeuw, chief technology officer, presented information concerning technology, first updating the board on the status of the 21st Century Classroom project.

Most of the needed supplies for this initiative have been secured and ordered, and outlets have been installed at the respective schools that will have these unique classrooms. DeLeeuw made mention that once all items had been received and installed that teachers would receive a half day training session to learn various means of usage of the equipment.

DeLeeuw also spoke concerning the disposal of outdated technology equipment. Collecting and auctioning the older equipment has not been successful in the past, which poses a problem when it comes to physical storage for it. DeLeeuw suggested using Synergy Recycling, LLC, which is located in Mayodan. This company picks the items up for free and after recycling the items, they give cash back to the school system.

DeLeeuw also stated that the company completely shreds hard drives from the computers, which would takes care of any privacy matters some may be concerned with.

After hearing and reviewing DeLeeuw’s presentation, the board unanimously approved using Synergy.

The board also voted that there be no board meetings in July, after which they went into closed session.
