What is unethical?

Friday, February 1, 2013 — I am writing in response to your article “Unethical  Conduct leads mayor to question board’s actions.”

As a cancer survivor, I am appalled at the actions of Mayor Danny Long. To those of us who have suffered, or who have lost a loved one, it is disheartening to see Relay for Life put in a negative light.

Education, support and research are vital to the cancer patient and their families. Without the American Cancer Society, these programs would not be available to support the millions of families each year that receive these services.

Mayor Danny Long has accused the board members of “unethical” conduct regarding the request for a donation to Relay for Life. I have personally known Commissioner Chris Huneycutt for 20 years; I have never known him to be “unethical” in any way.

How can the board members be accused of unethical behavior when they do not benefit in any way? Was anyone really at fault or was it simply miscommunication? Only the board members know what truly transpired.  All money goes directly to the American Cancer Society.

It has already been stated that the town’s budget has a line item that does allow for such expenditures. The article referenced (GS 160A-20.1) supports the legality in the board’s actions.

§ 160A‑20.1. Contracts with private entities.

A city may contract with and appropriate money to any person, association, or corporation, in order to carry out any public purpose that the city is authorized by law to engage in. (1985, c. 271, s. 1.)

One benefit that I see is a community helping others to face a better tomorrow. That is something to be proud of and not discouraged. I encourage everyone to remember the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.
