I am writing as a concerned private citizen and as director of Blood Services of the Stanly County Red Cross.
I have been increasingly concerned and upset over the inclusion of the Community Blood Services into our county and city. The CBS was conceived and setup to supply Carolinas Medical Center (Charlotte Memorial) and Presbyterian Hospitals with blood as it became more difficult to keep up with demand. As far as I can ascertain, very little if any of this blood finds its way to Stanly County.
In fact, SRMC buys blood from a similiar blood service in Florida because it’s cheaper. The Red Cross still supplies blood here as well as thousands of towns and cities all over the country.
When I came to Stanly County in 1961, we used 100 percent Red Cross blood and they never let us down. Can you imagine a patient bleeding from an ulcer at 1-2 a.m. and needed 6-8 units of blood and we got it.
I urge you to give blood if you can, but give to the Red Cross blood drives.
I also urge those of you sponsoring these drives; churches, clubs, Walmart, etc. to ask where their blood is going. You may need some someday and Charlotte-Mecklenburg may have used it all.

Applauding the commissioners
In response to the recent article by Brian Graves regarding Clean Tech, I think that our county commissioners should be commended for their stand against Clean Tech’s offering jobs in exchange for Alcoa to be relicensed to operate the hydro dams on the Yadkin-Pee Dee.

Budget tips
The government has a problem with the budget. Why? The Republicans and the Democrats blame one another. Why? Don’t they both spend the money? Foolishly.
