Wednesday, January 9, 2013 —
In early December, the compassionate staff of Stanly Academy Learning Center set a goal to provide Christmas gift bags to all students of the school. Obviously, this was a lofty task; however, with determination, teamwork and the assistance of local businesses, our goal was met.
On Dec. 19, each student was given a gift bag as they departed for Christmas break. The spoken and unspoken appreciation each student communicated to the staff will be imprinted in our minds forever. Undoubtedly, each student and staff member left school that day feeling blessed and part of something very special.
Undoubtedly, without the generous contributions of local businesses, our goal would have never come to fruition.
Therefore, on behalf of the students and staff of Stanly Academy Learning Center, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the following local businesses for their partnership:
Applebee’s, Belk, Bojan-gles, CiCi’s Pizza, Hardees, JC Penney, N.C. State Employees’ Credit Union, Papa John’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, Rack Room Shoes and WalMart.
Michael R. Campbell,

Applauding the commissioners
In response to the recent article by Brian Graves regarding Clean Tech, I think that our county commissioners should be commended for their stand against Clean Tech’s offering jobs in exchange for Alcoa to be relicensed to operate the hydro dams on the Yadkin-Pee Dee.

Budget tips
The government has a problem with the budget. Why? The Republicans and the Democrats blame one another. Why? Don’t they both spend the money? Foolishly.
