Rebel Bulls take a 28-21 thriller over Monroe on wet turf
Sunday, October 19, 2008 — Once again the rains came, but this time, it was all smiles for South Stanly when the horn sounded on a 28-21 win over Monroe Friday night.
“I told myself I wasn’t going to get conservative on the wet field like we did against Forest Hills,” said Rebel Bulls Coach Luke Little. “We beat a good football team tonight. That’s probably our best win since I’ve been here, including our playoff wins last year.”
The Rebel Bulls got off to a scintillating start as top college recruit Terry Shankle made a big-time pass reception of quarterback Detric Allen’s pass and turned it into a 76-yard touchdown on the game’s third play from scrimmage.
On a third and nine from their own 24, Shankle leaped over the top of Monroe cornerback Marquis Robinson, who had inside position, tipped the ball over his head to himself, then spun around and outran the Redhawks safety to the end zone.
Kicker Mitchell Russell converted on the first of his four successful PATs on the night and South was up 7-0 at the 10:43 mark.
Monroe came out firing with their first play from scrimmage as well, but Rebel Bulls cornerback Demarius Allen made a leaping interception and returned the ball to the Monroe 20.
A block-in-the-back on the return moved the ball back to the Monroe 45, where the Rebel Bulls proceeded to march down the field to score in seven plays.
A key third-and-10 completion from Detric Allen to Demarius Allen gave South a first down at the Monroe 30. Then, on a huge fourth and seven, Detric Allen hit Darryl Davis on the sidelines at the Monroe 20. Davis tightroped the sidelines and got a great downfield block from Shankle to score from 26 yards out.
And the Rebel Bulls had a 14-0 lead and Monroe had run just one play from scrimmage.
With Donnard Covington running strong inside, the Redhawks marched down the field, picking up four first downs before stalling at the South 4.
After a 44-yard punt from South’s Aubrey Johnson, the Redhawks marched 49 yards on nine plays. While rolling to his right and throwing back across his body, Monroe quarterback Nolan McBride fired a strike to Jamison Crowder in the middle of the end zone for the touchdown with 6:29 to play in the half.
The Rebel Bulls picked up one first down with the ensuing possession, but were forced to punt after three plays netted -3 yards.
Monroe got a great punt return from Crowder to the South 38, then McBride connected with Quon Threatt on a 38-yard pass play over the middle to tie the game with 3:25 left in the half.
With their first possession of the third quarter, South’s offense gave up real estate as the Monroe line beat the Rebel Bulls up front. On a third and nine from their own 46, the Monroe line sacked Detric Allen for a huge 24-yard loss.
The Redhawk offense fed off the defensive play and drove the ball 67 yards for their third unanswered touchdown to take a 21-14 lead with 4:26 to play in the third period. The score came on a McBride to Issac Blakeney over the middle that covered 24 yards.
With the ensuing possession, Desi Brown took over at quarterback for the Rebel Bulls and ignited the offense in the rain.
With his first possession, Brown completed one pass for a first down before the offense stalled, due in part to consecutive illegal procedure penalties.
After a low snap and run by South punter Aubrey Johnson, Monroe took over on the South 37, but again the South secondary rose to the occasion.
This time Demarius Allen stepped in front of an intended receiver for the interception and returned the ball to the Monroe 19.
After another illegal procedure and a five yard loss on a quarterback sack, Brown lofted a pass to a leaping Shankle in the end zone for a game-tying touchdown at the 1:02 mark of the third quarter.
Two plays from scrimmage later, the Rebel Bull secondary made its third pick of the night. This time free safety Detric Allen came flying in high to take a pass away from the Monroe receiver.
Beginning from their own 41 after the interception, the Bulls converted a fourth and inches at the 30, then got a great 25 yard run from Brown, who just would not be denied as he gained the last 10 yards with Monroe defenders draped all over him.
The next play from scrimmage, the determined Brown ran the ball in from five yards out, giving the Rebel Bulls their best win under Coach Luke Little.

Albemarle, North renew their rivalry
The last season that the North Stanly football program enjoyed a victory over rival Albemarle was back in 1993, when the Comets blanked the Bulldogs 20-0.
