Thursday, June 24, 2010 —
Former South Stanly pitching star Russell Brewer signed a pro baseball contract this week with the Colorado Rockies.
Brewer is scheduled to report to the Casper (Wyo.) Ghosts of the advanced-rookie level Pioneer League on Monday.
Brewer posted 18 saves in three seasons of being the closer on the Vanderbilt baseball squad with a career ERA of 3.24. He was named to the All-SEC Freshman team in 2008, posting the seventh-highest save total in Commodore history with eight.
Regarding Brewer, Vandy head coach Tim Corbin called him “a fearless, tough competitor who will take the ball at anytime.”
Brewer was a standout in the classroom as well as the pitcher’s mound. He graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in human and organizational development, with a concentration in leadership and organizational effectiveness, and a minor in corporate strategy.
Brewer was named to the dean’s list and SEC Academic Honor Roll, and has been admitted to the Peabody College of Vanderbilt to pursue a master’s degree in the organizational leadership program in the fall of 2010.
He is the son of Pam and Keith Brewer of Norwood, and the grandson of Bobby Russell of Star and Martin Brewer of Laurinburg.
