West Stanly High School was named the 2013 Stanly County Public Library Quiz Bowl champion after besting North Stanly High School in the final round of the competition Saturday afternoon.
The competition, which used a double elimination format, consisted of six rounds. West Stanly began the competition by defeating North Stanly in the first round. A win over Gray Stone Day School in its second match sent the West Stanly team to the finals.
North Stanly’s trip to the finals came after first defeating South Stanly, then Gray Stone. The victory over Gray Stone was the result of three tie breakers after neither team failed to answer the first two questions correctly. The question which broke the tie came from Homer’s “Iliad.”
In the final round of the competition, West Stanly took home the top honor after defeating North Stanly with a score of 135-45.
West Stanly High School Quiz Bowl captain Jesse Swink was excited about his team’s win.
“We’re really happy. We were surprised, actually,” Swink said, noting that the team’s performance at the tournament went especially well.
“We’ve never gone undefeated in a competition before.”
Preparations for the Quiz Bowl began last year, Swink explained, adding that coach Jeff Hansen provided the team with practice questions he composed after conducting research on various topics.
“We started practicing right before Christmas,” Swink said.
“At first we practiced once a week. Starting in January, we’ve been practicing three days a week.”
Quiz Bowl questions cover a wide range of topics, everything from sports to science, to music and literature. In order to prepare for the competition, some teams select members with specializations in certain topics. Practice for the most part went smoothly, Swink said, except for a few obstacles.
“We had some difficulties in the area of general science. We don’t really have a science person on our team. It was difficult but we got through it,” Swink said.
Following its win, the West Stanly team planned on getting together to celebrate their win over a meal.
“All of the teams did great,” Swink said.
“There was a really good turnout and it was a great competition.”
This year marks the 33rd year that the Stanly County Public Library has hosted the Public Library Quiz Bowl.
