Richfield Elementary first grade students celebrated a milestone in the school year Monday afternoon.
The first grade students of Amanda Furr, Amy Cord and Donna Drye celebrated the 100th day of school with a Family Fun Event.
Parents were invited to share lunch with their children in the school cafeteria prior to going back to the classrooms to learn about numbers.
“We’re understanding the relationship between numbers,” Drye said.
“We’re finding numbers that come after, before and between.”
The students utilized a number chart to help them visualize number patterns and relationships. The chart is a 10-by-10 square filled in with numbers from zero to 99. By looking at the chart, students are able to learn relationships between numbers such as which numbers come before and after 65 or which number is five more than 55.
The number chart, Drye said, can be used in many fun activities.
In one activity, Drye would call out clues to a number using number relationships. The students then had to find the number and shade it in. Once all the numbers had been located a shaded number 100 appeared on the chart.
Cord explained that the day was a great opportunity to allow parents to see what their children are learning in class.
“We are sharing what we’re doing in math with the parents so they can practice at home with their kids,” Cord said, adding that each parent received additional materials to reenforce the math lessons at home.
“We’re going to give them math packs to use at home and activities to follow up as well.”
Emily Tucker of Richfield attended the 100th Day of School Family Fun Event with her 6-year-old son.
“I came here to spend time with Ethan,” Tucker said.
Ethan said his favorite part of the day was “eating lunch with my momma.”
Richfield Principal Shelby Lawson commented on the turnout for the event.
“Our parent involvement at Richfield Elementary is very good,” Lawson said.
“I’m pleased with the participation today.”
