Community college honors trustee chair

Sunday, August 29, 2010 — At the August trustee meeting, Elbert L. “Whit” Whitley Jr. was elected to his 28th term as chairman of the Stanly Community College board. To honor his 27 years as trustee chair and 33 years as a trustee, the college recently unveiled a bronze bust crafted in his likeness to be displayed in recognition of his dedication and commitment while serving the college.

Other members of the college board, staff and members of the Whitley family gathered in the Dennis Community Room on campus to witness the unveiling, which came as a surprise to Whitley.

SCC President Dr. Michael Taylor, highlighted Whitley’s “tours of duty” on the SCC board as both a trustee and as a chair.

“Our research indicates there is only one longer serving chair in the North Carolina community college system than Whit,” Taylor said.

“In addition, during his 33 year tenure on the board, he has worked with 53 of the college’s 60 trustees who have served since the college was chartered in 1971. His is a record of not simply longevity but of dedication to moving the college forward, of championing the cause of our students and of helping create an educational institution that has well served the community and region over the past four decades.”

In addition to the bust, Whitley was also presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, issued by Gov. Beverly Perdue. Whitley was nominated for the award by Taylor for his long service to the college and the entire community.

The award, created in 1965, is one of the highest awards a North Carolina governor can issue and is given to citizens state-wide for outstanding service to their communities and the state.

The bronze bust, which will be displayed in the Dennis Community Room, is not the first honor the college and trustees have bestowed on Whitley during his three plus decades tenure at the college.

In 1999, the trustees recognized their board chair by naming the newest building on the SCC Albe-marle campus in his honor. The Whitley Technology Center, a 17,000-square-foot facility, is home to computer and electronic labs as well as a certification testing center. In 2004, The Crutchfield Family Foundation presented the college with a clock and tower for the Crutchfield campus in Locust and asked that it be dedicated in honor of Whitley’s service to the college.

Taylor noted that Whitley attended his first board meeting on July 20, 1977, just six years after the college was chartered and five years after classes began. He was first elected chair by his fellow trustees in 1983 and has been re-elected to a one-year term ever since.

“Whit has provided the college with vision and leadership as SCC grew from a small technical institute to the comprehensive community college we are today with campuses in both Albemarle  and Locust,” Taylor said.

In addition to his work for the college, Whitley currently serves as mayor of Albemarle.
