Stanly Community College (SCC) has recently been awarded a grant from the Collectors Foundation.
This foundation was established in 2005 as a philanthropic movement among classic car and boat enthusiasts to provide scholarship and grant funding for organizations committed to hands-on training in this industry.
The SCC Automotive Training Center enrolls students looking for work in the collision industry and those who have a love for automobile restoration.
The college will use these grant funds to purchase tools needed for metal fabrication and metal forming which will include English wheels, planishing hammers and other tools used in the area of restoration and collision repair.
It is the desire of the college’s training center to pass along these automotive restoration and metal working skills to the next generation of enthusiasts.
The lack of these techniques in the collision and restoration industry could lead to a loss of skill by the newest generation of automotive lovers.
There are currently many automotive restoration projects in process ranging from a 1937 Cadillac LaSalle to a 1970 Chevelle SS in the center.
Using the new metal working tools, students can see the entire project from start to completion, which builds enthusiasm and excitement for both the students and the department.
“We are so excited to receive this grant funding for our program,” said SCC Automotive Program Head Billy Huneycutt.
“Hands-on education is vital for student learning and our students deserve to have what they need to meet and exceed industry standards.”
