Ariel Bridges recently completed Governor’s Sch-ool West on the campus of Old Salem College in Winston-Salem.
Governor’s School is a five-week summer residential program for intellectually gifted high school students. It is the oldest statewide program in the nation and marked its 50th anniversary this summer. It draws faculty from colleges and universities across the country.
There were 10 Area I disciplines on campus which included courses of study in academic and performing/ visual arts fields.
Bridges was nominated in English.
Her studies in this field included reading contemporary texts, composition, leading class discussions, presenting a reading of original work to students and faculty, and contributing to the student anthology.
Bridges also studied in Area II which explored connections between all 10 disciplines and Area III where the goal was to link her personal experiences in these fields to real world applications.
Visiting speakers, performances and social events were offered to enrich the learning experience.
One of the highlights of the summer was meeting Darryl Hunt and his attorney. Hunt spoke to the students after a showing of the film, “The Trials of Darryl Hunt,” which depicted the events surrounding his arrest, trial, and incarceration for a brutal crime that he did not commit. After serving 20 years in prison, he was exonerated by DNA evidence.
Bridges is a rising senior at West Stanly High School where she plays tennis and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has earned a Padereweski Gold Medal on piano and often plays at community events.
She is the daughter of Vivian Bridges and Judge Kevin Bridges.
