Friday, June 22, 2012 —
The Stanly Community College (SCC) Foundation Lecture Series will host its second event on June 26 featuring local favorite storyteller Georgette M. Edgerton. The presentation will be in the Kelley building on the Albemarle campus and will begin at 7 p.m.
A graduate from North Stanly High School and Johnson C. Smith University, Edgerton has worked as an educator for more than 30 years. She teaches science at Stanly Academy Learning Center.
As a mother of three young daughters, she found herself amusing them, as well as neighborhood children, by sharing old stories she had learned from her own family. She now has three grandchildren who enjoy her tales as much as visitors at storytelling festivals and community events. Edgerton entertains at birthday parties, schools, family reunions, churches, and women’s retreats. She is an avid reader with a love for children.
“Storytelling is in my blood,” comments Edgerton. “I acquired the love for storytelling from my mother Cornelia Medley, my aunt Cherry Mae Covington, and the late Jackie Torrence. I consider all these women ‘sheroes’ in my life.”
Edgerton is a member of the Uwharrie Storytellers of Stanly County and her hobbies include walking, reading, teaching, gardening and, of course, storytelling. She is married to Ervin Edgerton who supports her opportunities for sharing stories.
The SCC Lecture Series presentation is free and open to the public.
