Friday, March 9, 2012 —
A Gray Stone Day School senior will host a community baby shower this weekend to benefit the Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) of Stanly County as part of her graduation project.
Meredith Allen, 17, daughter of Lee and Mary Burt Allen, got the idea for a baby shower after her experience at the PRC two summers ago. As a volunteer, Allen helped to provide childcare for the parenting classes and also assisted in the center’s boutique, Hope’s Closet.
“I saw all the great work they did,” Allen said.
“It’s through the mothers that we have our next generation — our next leaders,” Allen said, adding that all children deserve to be brought up with the basic necessities.
Allen spoke with PRC Executive Director Gina Russell and staff about what the needs of the center were.
“They have a wish list that they send out,” Allen said.
“Items range from diapers and wipes all the way down to Thank You cards.”
The PRC is also in need of car seats, strollers, children’s clothing and gently used items.
“They’ll appreciate any donations,” Allen said.
Allen is no stranger to community service. As a Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY), Allen is asked to commit to completing 100 hours of community service each year.
The baby shower is the first time Allen has taken on a project completely on her own.
“This is the first time I’ve done it without adult instruction,” Allen said.
In preparation for the shower, Allen posted fliers throughout the community and sent out 40 personal, handmade invitations to friends. The pink and blue invitations were each adorned with a small bow.
“I tied every single one,” Allen said.
Allen is also in the process of contacting local businesses and churches for their support.
“Every church has childcare and they understand how difficult it can be for mothers,” Allen said.
“I hope they show their support for the center.”
Allen, who has plans to study international relations and political science after graduation, hopes to pass her project on to a fellow student next year.
“I’d love to pass this down to a junior who would like to take it on when they’re a senior,” Allen said.
The baby shower will be from 9 a.m.-noon March 10, at Glory Beans Coffee House, 134 W. Main St., Albemarle. Guests who bring an item for the shower will receive 10 percent off all coffee drinks.
Allen hopes the baby shower will be an opportunity for the community to express its support for the PRC.
“I would like to see mothers and fathers come out, grab a cup of coffee, and show their love and support for these mothers that need a helping hand.”
The Pregnancy Resource Center of Stanly County is at 124 E. North St., Albemarle. Call (704) 983-2100 for more information.
