The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) announces the 10 winners of its regional “High School Grant” program.
Each of the following winning schools received a $1,000 grant for hosting top-performing blood drives with CBCC in the 2011-2012 school year:
Anson High School – Wadesboro; East Burke High School – Connelly Springs; East Rowan High School – Salisbury; Forestview High School – Gastonia; Garinger High School – Charlotte; Olympic High School (now The Renaissance School at Olympic H.S.) – Charlotte; South Mecklenburg High School – Charlotte; North Stanly High School – New London; Northwestern High School – Rock Hill, S.C.; and West Lincoln High School – Lincolnton.
“Students make up 20 percent of our donor base so we appreciate the valiant efforts and commitment of all of our region’s high schools and students who donate blood with us,” said Martin Grable, president and CEO of the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas.
“We are proud to recognize these top-performing high schools that went above and beyond in hosting blood drives throughout the year to ensure local patients have access to life-saving blood.”
The “High School Grant” program is one of the many ways CBCC is supporting local students and schools. Throughout the year, CBCC will offer $36,000 in scholarships and grants. Participating high schools are encouraged to sponsor a minimum of two drives throughout the 2012-2013 school year to qualify in winning a grant.

Pfeiffer University announces that Stephen Ray Mitchell, M.D., M.A.C.P., F.A.A.P., F.A.C.R., dean for medical education and professor of medicine and pediatrics at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C., will offer the commencement address at spring 2013 commencement exercises at 10:30 a.m. May 11 in Merner Gym, Misenheimer campus.
