Monday, January 9, 2012 —
Stanly County Schools’ (SCS’) new finance director took part in her first Finance Committee meeting Tuesday evening.
Carrie Cox, formerly of Cabarrus County Schools, presented the committee with some of her ideas for SCS during the meeting.
“I want us to always do what’s best for the students and employees,” Cox said.
“I don’t want to mirror Cabarrus County. I think Stanly County is very unique.”
One issue Cox would like to see addressed soon, she said, is the end of teacher prepay, a mandatory change that would reduce teachers’ August checks by a substantial amount.
According to Cox, the bill requiring the change has not been finalized, but SCS should look at a few options before hand.
She also expressed plans to meet with the employees of each school in the near future in order to explain the upcoming change.
“We can tentatively tell everyone, ‘This is our plan, pending legislation,’” Cox said.
“We can plan and be prepared and have a backup plan.”
Improving the relationship between SCS and the Stanly County Board of Commissioners is another of Cox’s goals.
SCS Superintendent Dr. Samuel DePaul suggested regular meetings between himself, Cox, County Manager Andy Lucas and the commissioners’ finance officer.
Close communication between both organizations would benefit the schools and the county, Cox said.
“People are going to move into a county based on the schools,” she said.
Cox informed the committee that the finance department will be partnering with Stanly Community College and Pfeiffer University to utilize accounting interns in the department and that she is working with Associate Superintendent Dr. Terry Griffin and Personnel Director Dr. Sandra Carter on a new plan for contracted personnel.
Later that evening, Cox presented her information to the school board as a whole.
She said her first few weeks with SCS have been mostly positive.
“I’ve never met a group of people so enthusiastic about everything. Stanly County Schools has a wonderful staff,” she said.
