Stanly Community College (SCC) recently received a $9,500 College Access Challenge Grant from the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS).
This provision will allow SCC to try new strategies designed to help students in the health science programs persist and reach their goal of graduation. SCC is one of 16 colleges selected for this funding.
In today’s fast-paced learning environment, having an in-depth understanding of the student’s experience is critical to their success.
Certain factors can have a discernible effect on graduation rates, such as: first-generation college student, time management skills, poor test taking skills and juggling jobs while trying to keep up with assignments. Identifying and working with students who are “at risk” due to these factors can help them achieve their goals and complete their programs of study.
“The College Access Challenge Grant will allow SCC to introduce targeted strategies designed to assist health program students specifically,” said Lois Smith, vice president of organizational growth, development and effectiveness.
“Processes and interventions will be initiated to help students in the Respiratory Therapy and the Associate Degree Nursing programs. These two programs were selected first due to the many challenges those students encounter.”
