Pfeiffer University will offer Save the Stories: A Writing Workshop, Aug. 6-10, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., at the Groves Building, 143 N. Second St., Albemarle.
The five-day workshop, open to all adults, offers a blend of story discovery and development through the use of specific writing techniques. Professional development credit is available to teachers in Stanly County.
“Our stories reside in our experiences, our personal and social histories,” said Sylvia Hoffmire, assistant professor of English and workshop leader.
“Writing exercises help us locate them in our consciousness and tease them out of our subconscious so they can find grace and permanence on the page.”
Hoffmire, who teaches creative writing and directs Pfeiffer’s Cultural Studies program, holds a master’s of fine arts degree from Queens University.
She is a recipient of the North Carolina Emerging and Regional Artist Awards as well as an NBC Writing Residency grant. The Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation lists her in Artists and Communities: America Creates for the Millennium, a nationwide artist-in-residence program.
She’s been listed in the North Carolina Arts Council Resident and Touring Artist Director, South Carolina Arts Commission Director, United Arts of Wake County Directory and Asheville Arts Council Directory.
She authored “Thoughts of Another Day,” a collection of short stories, under the sponsorship of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources and United Arts Council of Rowan County.
She is published with national publisher Baker’s Plays and, R.K.V.R.Y., a quarterly literary journal, among others, and speaks frequently about writing pedagogy.
Cost is $75. Register by July 23 online www.pfeiffer.edu or call (704) 945-7355.
