Stanly Community College (SCC) has announced the inception of a new certificate program for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinists.
This program is unique to the region in that it partners with local industry and provides not only basic and CNC machining but also alternative machining training.
SCC is partnering with Carnes Miller Gear in Locust who will provide classroom space and equipment for hands-on training.
SCC has received numerous letters from local industry in support of this program. The curriculum will encompass basic and CNC machining as well as alternative machining methods such as process management, water jet cutting, laser cutting, high definition plasma cutting and more.
The certificate program consists of two semesters and the entire program runs from Aug. 13 until May 2013.
Classes will be held Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. with hands-on training on Fridays from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
According to SCC President Dr. Brenda Kays, “SCC personnel have taken the opportunity to tour local industries and speak to manufacturers about the needs of their workforce. We have repeatedly heard that a great need exists for all levels of machinist skills in Stanly County. We are excited to offer this new certificate program that will help industry meet their immediate and future needs for a skilled labor force, put people back to work, and create a labor pool that can attract new industry to Stanly County.”
The North Carolina Employment Security Commission estimates that the entry-level wage for a machinist is $15.34 per hour and the average wage is $20.20.
This current class is full but the college is accepting names for future classes.
