Community college honors Webb scholars
Tuesday, February 2, 2010 — Stanly Community College (SCC) recently held the annual Webb Scholars Luncheon to honor the selected scholarship recipients.
This scholarship program is funded by the Crutch-field Family Foundation and is named in honor of Dr. H.T. “Toby” Webb Jr., who has served on the board of trustees for the college since 1984.
The Webb Scholar program provides 25 annual scholarships to prospective male students enrolled in associate in arts, associate in science, or associate in applied science degree programs.
SCC President Dr. Michael Taylor explained the history of the Webb Scholarship program.
John Anderson, a Webb Scholarship recipient, expressed his gratitude of the program and offered encouraging words of advice for fellow students.
Webb presented the closing remarks, praising Edward Crutchfield’s contributions to the college. Webb said he was proud of the scholars and their accomplishments.

Community college honors trustee chair
At the August trustee meeting, Elbert L. “Whit” Whitley Jr. was elected to his 28th term as chairman of the Stanly Community College board. To honor his 27 years as trustee chair and 33 years as a trustee, the college recently unveiled a bronze bust crafted in his likeness to be displayed in recognition of his dedication and commitment while serving the college.

Gray Stone students travel to Costa Rica
Spanish instructor Lara Sarris recently returned from Costa Rica where she led five Gray Stone students on the trip of a lifetime. Kendall Taylor, Pressley Laton, Brooke Russell, Taylor Hopkins and Jenna Boyd accompanied Sarris on a trip organized through the American Council for Inter-national Studies (ACIS), an international travel company that assists schools with educational travel.

Pfeiffer names new associate VP for academic affairs
Dr. Alan Belcher has been named associate vice president for academic affairs at Pfeiffer University.
Belcher, who held a similar role at the University of Charleston, in Charleston, W. Va., began his new duties on Aug. 2 and will report directly to Dr. Tracy Espy, provost and vice president for academic affairs. -
West Stanly FBLA excels at state leadership conference
West Stanly’s Future Business Leaders of America strives to mold regular high school students into professional business men and women. All this, while still teaching business ethics and service to the community. West Stanly’s FBLA chapter is continuing the tradition set forth by previous members.

Stanly Community Col-lege (SCC) students recently completed the requirements for the Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program. This class of 14 students was the largest group of graduates since the inception of the program.
