Five rising seniors at Gray Stone Day School have been selected to attend Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) at various campuses across the state.
Dustin Britt, son of G. Jeff and Laura Britt of Mt. Gilead, will study alternative programming and DNA fingerprinting at East Carolina University in Greenville.
Will Howland, son of William and Amy Howland of Harrisburg, will attend Appalachian State University to study exploratory data analysis and physics phenomena.
Caroline McLeod, daughter of Michael and Laura McLeod of Albemarle, will study ethical hacking and problem solving at Appalachian State University.
Taylor Morris, daughter of David and Sonya Morris of Granite Quarry, will attend North Carolina Central University in Durham to study atherosclerosis research and bioinformatics.
Ria Sethi, daughter of Dharmesh and Anju Sethi of Concord, will study atmospherical science and physics at East Carolina University.
Administered by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, the program is cost-free and state-funded for academically talented students who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics.
The curriculum is designed to give students an exciting, challenging enrichment experience in science and mathematics.
In addition to the instructional activities, students conduct independent research projects that are presented orally in an open forum.
Instructors work closely with students on their projects and guide them in the preparation of their reports.
The residential program brings together rising juniors and seniors for four weeks of intensive study on four campuses of the University of North Carolina system.
