Friday, December 28, 2012 —
Albemarle Parks and Recreation (AP&R) has declared January 2013 as “Get off the Couch” month.
In order to help shed some of those unwanted pounds right after the holidays, AP&R has designed a series of exercises and programs to aid people in thier individual goals for maintaining a healthy weight and diet.
“Enjoy your holiday get-togethers, but when you get back to work in the new year, we have a way to help you get started toward an active and healthy 2013,” said Toby Thorpe, AP&R director, in an email.
“ ‘Get off the Couch’ month features free organized lunchtime activities on Tuesdays and Thursdays at AP&R facilities, as well as suggested activities for the other days. Come join us in January,” said Thorpe.
Some of the lunchtime activities are as follows:
On Tuesday, Jan. 8 there will be a Lunchtime Walking Group. Bring comfortable walking shoes and meet at Rock Creek Park at noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a 40 minute walk on the trail with friends. This activity will continue weekly.
Thursday, Jan. 10 AP&R hosts Learn to Play Disc Golf. Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States today. It’s easy and inexpensive and one can learn to pay at City Lake Thursday at noon.
Tuesday, Jan. 15 there will be an Introduction to Geocoaching class. Geocoaching combines hiking and orienteering. It’s a great way to enjoy and explore the outdoors. Tony Hill will teach a lunchtime seminar on this sport at noon Tuesday at Rock Creek.
On Tuesday, Jan. 22 AP&R will host a Learn to Play Bocce class. This sport is also known as “lawn bowling” and originated in Italy. Bocce is fast becoming a favorite in America. Come out to learn the game on Tuesday at Rock Creek.
Thursday, Jan. 31 there will be an Introduction to Zumba class. Certified Zumba instructor Charity Medlin will instruct a lunchtime class in this fast-growing aerobic activity. The class takes place at the E.E. Waddell Center at noon.
In addition to the organized activities, there are also suggestions for daily activities to enjoy.
In honor of Isaac Asimov’s birthday, a famous writer and astronomer, AP&R recommends that one get a telescope and go star gazing on the night of Wednesday, January 2.
For Monday, Jan. 21 AP&R suggests one exercise with someone they love, in honor of National Hugging Day.
For Friday, Jan. 25 AP&R reminds everyone that the first Winter Olympics began on this day in 1924. For exercise that day, AP&R advocates that one go skating, on wheels if there is no ice available.
With a list of tips, suggestions and planned activities, AP&R is providing the citizens of Stanly with ample opportunity to enjoy some time exercising.
