Former North Carolina state senator and captain in the United States Army Reserve, serving tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Cal Cunningham will be the keynote speaker at the countywide Stanly County Democratic Party rally Oct. 18.
The event will include all local candidates and a free hot dog dinner with all the trimmings beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Stanly County Senior Center. Everyone is welcome to attend regardless of party affiliation, if any.
After serving in Iraq, Cunningham was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award.
In 2011, Cunningham served his country working with a special task force in Afghanistan.
The countywide rally, hosted by the Democratic Century Club, the Democratic Women of Stanly County and the Stanly County Democratic Party, will conclude the first daylong activities for early voting and the “Get Out and Vote Early in Stanly County” campaign.
Onsite voting and voter registration, if not registered, began at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 18 in the Social Services auditorium in the Stanly County Commons, 1000 N. First St., Albemarle and is open until 7 p.m., Monday-Friday until Nov. 2.
