GHA receives grant for program at Carolina Farms

Tuesday, Febuary 16, 2010 — GHA, Inc. is the recipient of a 2010 Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation Com-munity Seed Grant in the amount of $5,000 to establish The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation Vocational Program at Carolina Farms.

This new program will create an on-site horticulture business that includes planting, growing and marketing the herbs and plants by individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

“We are excited to help Carolina Farms develop this entrepreneurial en-deavor for adults with ASD and view the program as a role model for the creation of similar programs throughout the United States,” said Linda Walder Fiddle, executive director of The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation, a national autism organization with the mission to develop, advocate for and support residential, vocational, recreational and educational programs throughout the United States for adults with ASD.

Through the foundation, GHA has previously received support for greenhouse and farming programs at Carolina Farms.

Carolina Farms is a GHA-owned and operated program that includes three 5-bed homes, one 2-bed home, a potting shed, barn, greenhouse and pool, all situated on 33 acres of farm land in the Millingport community. Having received this recent grant, GHA has acknowledged this support through its naming the program The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation Vocational Program at Carolina Farms.

In 2003, GHA began construction on Carolina Farms, which was designed for individuals with autism to receive vocational training with regards to growing, harvesting and marketing herbs, flowers and vegetables from the on-site horticultural program.

Since its inception, the Farm has served as a facility for training, teaching and research purposes and has been toured by visitors from as far as Denmark, Japan and Germany.

Founded by Linda Walder Fiddle, The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation is named in memory and honor of her son, Danny, whose life inspired the volunteer-run organization’s mission to focus exclusively on adults with ASD.

“Mrs. Fiddle realized first-hand that there was a serious lack of residential, recreational, vocational, educational and family-oriented resources available to adults with autism. Her vision to honor the individuality of each person with autism throughout his or her life became a reality when the first grants were awarded from The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation in 2002,” said Dawn Allen, GHA chief executive officer.

“The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation has enabled GHA to expand upon our vocational efforts agency wide and has assisted in allowing the individuals we serve to reach their fullest potential.

“We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to partner with Linda Fiddle and the Foundation to ensure that we create innovative opportunities for adults with autism to cover the entire span of their lives.”
