Several local churches will host a barbecued chicken benefit Aug. 20 for Stanly County natives Danny and Cindy Almond.
Danny, 52, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2009 and has been undergoing rigorous and extensive treatments for it. He has been taking chemotherapy medication intravenously one day a week for three hours each day, and he also takes a chemotherapy pill every day.
When doctors first found the tumor on his pancreas, they wanted to surgically remove it, but, after further testing, changed their opinion when they found the tumor has metastasized to include a portion of the abdomen cavity and liver.
Danny had been a 20-year employee at Preformed Line Products in Albemarle as a forming machine operator at the time the cancer was found. After realizing what he would be facing, Danny chose to retire early, making June 30 his final day with Preformed Line.
“I want to say a special thank you to Preformed Line for all they have done for me and the support they have shown to me and my wife,” Danny said.
Cindy, Danny’s wife of 33 years, was recently placed on disability as a result of problems she has been having with her back. She previously had two surgeries for those problems to help bring her comfort but she is in need of a third surgery.
Together the Almonds have three children, Amber Reynolds and husband, Paul; Dustin Almond and Derrick Almond and wife, Danielle. They also have four grandchildren.
To help with medical expenses, Green Memorial United Methodist Church in Aquadale decided to partner with seven other local churches to host a benefit on Aug. 20 for the Almonds. The partner churches include Cedar Grove, Union Grove, Mt. Zion, Bethlehem, Union Chapel, Cottonville Baptist and Porter Methodist.
“We want to thank everyone that has stepped forward and have volunteered. We have always been on the giving end, so it’s a little overwhelming. But we are so very appreciative and grateful for everyone’s efforts and hard work,” Cindy said.
Cindy and Danny have also said the prayers and support they have received, not only from their community, but also from complete strangers have been encouraging.
“There are some rough days, but to walk to the mailbox and open a card from someone offering the encouragement and support has been such a blessing,” Cindy said.
Plates are being sold for a $7 donation and include a half barbecued chicken, slaw, bread, chips and cake. The chicken will be prepared by Christian Cooking Convoy.
