This Weekend in Stanly County January 25

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 — We’ll feel the bite of winter this week so it’s a good time to wrap yourself around some delicious barbeque. On Saturday head out to Badin where this small but historically important town is celebrating its 100th birthday. There’ll be all sorts of events going on throughout the year, but right now it’s the special treat of that favored feast, Badin Volunteer Fire Department’s annual barbecue fundraiser. In addition to delicious meals, the event will feature a special fire history presentation for patrons.

Of the many barbecue fundraisers hosted throughout the year in Stanly County there are little details about each that resonate with visitors. For instance, some folks may prefer the smoky flavor of one department’s style or the spicy sauce from another department. Well, Badin Volunteer Fire Department barbecue has always put smiles on visitors’ faces and the flavor is well known in the area, but one item that gets hefty compliments every year is the slaw. The combination of succulent barbecue and stellar slaw, unmatched by any department anywhere, are a real recipe for success. Come on out and support the Badin Volunteer Fire Department’s efforts in the community and enjoy a romp through local fire history while you’re there. Get your barbecue and slaw in plates, sandwiches or by the pound but don’t miss out on a great evening.

There’s music in the air on Saturday. From 6 pm to 9 pm at the Agri-Civic Center, Karen Peck and New River, listed as one of Southern Gospel music’s top groups today, will entertain with Carolina Homestead. This award winning and Grammy nominated group is sponsored by St. Stephen’s Wesleyan Church and ticket sales go to Stanly County Relay for Life 2013.

Sunday there’s more lively entertainment in store. From 1 pm to 3 pm, Fancy Feet Dance and Floor Gymnastics Studios present their winter revue. You’ll warm up just watching this event. Fancy Feet is dedicated to turning out dancers who are not only well versed in a variety of styles and techniques, but also true artists. Fancy Feet has gained a reputation for providing the best possible dance training in the area for nearly 25 years. Students have gone on to enjoy professional careers from television to Broadway.

Now here’s a heads up for an event scheduled for Thursday, January 31. The Historical Society of Stanly County and Stanly County Museum will present “Reel History.” This is the history of theaters in Stanly County. The program will be presented by John T. Williams, art teacher and local history buff and will include a movie about Albemarle filmed in the mid 1930’s. The event takes place in the Groves Building at 143 North Second Street in downtown Albemarle beside what used to be the Alameda Theater. The program is free and the public is invited, but seating is limited so call for reservations at the Stanly County Public Library and Museum.
