A newly-formed quilting group is now getting together in the public meeting room of the Stanly County Public Library.
This as of yet unnamed quilting group has been meeting since November.
At their last meeting they began a quilt for a veteran. The finished product was presented to a wounded veteran the Salisbury Veteran’s Hospital for Christmas.
Zelma Eudy is the unofficial leader and spokesperson for the group.
“Our group is open to anyone interested in quilting,” said Eudy.
“Our youngest member is four years old.”
She stated that they work with anyone regardless of their level of expertise in quilting.
“I like to teach things I enjoy,” said Eudy.
“I have to teach some of them; some used to be careful and methodical, but are now comfortable with quilting.”
Eudy explained that they should be able to finish the veteran’s quilt in two sessions, but “We’re still learning.”
“We usually do an independent project, but we wanted to try a group project,” said Eudy.
“I love to quilt,” said Ann Currie.
“Meeting with this group motivates me to quilt. It really gets the creativity going. I like the interaction amongst the ladies. I’m a self-taught quilter, but I’m learning lots of little tricks,” said Currie.
Eudy relayed that some of their members are new and some of them are old friends.
Eudy’s mother, Lucile Dennis, is also a member of the quilting group.
Dennis elaborated on her daughter’s experience with quilting throughout her life.
“I didn’t have the time to make clothes for her, so I bought them.
“The clothes kept falling apart on her, so I knew she would have to learn how to sew for herself,” said Dennis.
“We have lots of fun with the group. We’re laid back,” said Dennis.
As a whole, the group believes that quilting and quilts can help one to feel better.
“Talking about great colors makes you feel better,” they all agreed upon during their session.
The group began meeting at the Stanly County Museum, but eventually moved to the Public Library because the space better suited their needs.
This quilting group is all about the fellowship they have with one another during their sessions. They all enjoy themselves and enjoy talking with one another.
