Got candy? Got flowers? Romance is in the air and Valentine’s Day is upon us. Legends abound about this most romantic of holidays, but although its true origins are lost in the mists of time, it is looked forward to and celebrated in many countries throughout the world. Here in Stanly County we have several events to keep even the most romantically-minded happy.
Let’s begin with a visit to the Falling Rivers Gallery on West Main Street in downtown Albemarle. A show titled From the Heart is in progress with jewelry and accessories that include scarves and hand-painted purses, all beautifully displayed throughout the Gallery. All the items are made by local artists and include a wide range of materials from copper and silver to polymer clay and glass. Here you’re sure to find that one-of-a-kind gift for “your special someone or someone special.” The show runs through Saturday, February 16th.
Saturday is also the day to treat oneself to a special meal. Badin’s annual Poor Man’s Supper takes place at Badin Volunteer Fire Department from 4 pm to 9 pm. This is a true community staple offered annually by Better Badin Inc. to promote camaraderie and fellowship among friends and volunteers. All donations accepted during the supper are set aside for benevolence in the greater Badin community and support of other Better Badin projects and events. Fare includes baked beans, cooked cabbage, boiled potatoes and cornbread with an extensive variety of home-style cornbread recipes; a little something for even the most discerning palate. For those who like something on the side the onions are fresh, the chow-chow is sweet or spicy to taste and the relish is to be relished.
Also on Saturday, and for a complete change of pace, celebrate Valentine’s Day in Romantic Italian style at Rocky River Vineyards. The evening out includes a four course Italian dinner by Southern Style Events & Catering, two glasses of your favorite Rocky River Vineyards wine per person (equivalent of one bottle per couple), music and dancing with DJ Todd Sullivan, a photo booth by Shutter Hutch, a bonfire, games, prizes, and more. The event takes place from 6 pm to 10 pm.
In the mood for music? The Stanly County Concert Association brings you the Sandlapper Singers to fill the bill as they perform at the Agri-Civic Center this Saturday from 7:30 pm until 9 pm. Their “red hot and blue” show features the music of bluegrass, Broadway and jazz.
On Sunday, finish off your Valentine’s Day weekend at Dennis Vineyards. Here you’ll find plenty of romance in the air at their A Time for Brides event. Drop in between 1 pm and 5 pm as the vineyard celebrates this wedding season with a grand showcase of the area’s finest vendors. Taste your way through caterers and bakeries, listen to DJ’s as they show their stuff, and admire dazzling floral centerpieces.
Choose one or more of the many events here in Stanly County this weekend and create your own romantic Valentine’s Day occasion. And don’t forget the candy and flowers.
