Tuesday, January 29, 2013 —
If, as the saying goes, variety is the spice of life, then Stanly County winter weather is adding a good deal of spice to life around here lately. Into the pot goes ice, a little rain, sleet, a little thunder and some sun. And talking of variety, two events this weekend certainly offer just that.
The first, on Thursday, January 31, 2013, is an historical look at the theatres of Stanly County and includes a movie about Albemarle filmed in the mid 1930’s. The event, “Reel History,” is presented by the Historical Society of Stanly County and Stanly County Museum. It is free and the public is invited. However, seating is limited so call the Stanly County Public Library and Museum at 704-986-3755 for reservations or email stanlycountymuseum@gmail.com. Include your name, phone number and the number in your party. The program begins at 6:30 pm at the Groves Building at 143 North Second Street in downtown Albemarle, beside the former Alameda Theatre.
The program’s presenter, John T. Williams, is a visual art teacher and local history buff. He will share information and photographs he has collected showing the history of the many theatres that have offered entertainment in Stanly County over the years. He’ll recall the original Stanly Theatre and its amazing plaster work before it was reincarnated as the Center Theatre. He’ll also talk about the history of other local theatres that include the Duval, Carolina, Edisonia, Bijou, Majestic, Alameda, Victoria, Roxy, and the Lyric. He’ll also include information on former theatres in Badin, Norwood, New London, Oakboro and Richfield.
For a complete change of pace, no pun intended, check out the Polar Bear 5K Run and Walk (and no, it does not require participants to plunge into icy water, but is simply a good run on a well-marked course). The event starts at the YMCA Park in Albemarle, at 9:30 AM and is sponsored by Endy Elementary PTO to raise money for new playground equipment. Strollers are welcome but must start at the back. Each runner receives a bag containing a t-shirt and other items donated by local businesses. Bags will be available for pick-up at Endy Elementary School located at 27670 Betty Road, Albemarle between 2:30 pm and 6:30 pm. Bags may be picked up the morning of the event at the YMCA Park in Albemarle. There will be mile markers, water and volunteers on the course, which will not be closed to traffic. Awards ceremony will be held after the event with awards given to the top 3 male and female runners overall and the top 3 male and female in each age division (5-10, 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and up).
Stay warm, stay dry, enjoy the variety of our weather and check for the variety of events coming your way here in Stanly County.
