Tuesday, November 13, 2012 —
Begin your weekend on Thursday by heading to Norwood to visit the Norwood Museum. Here you can view a special exhibit called Antique Quilts and King Cotton. The ten quilts are on loan from the Gregg Museum of Art and Design at NC State University. The exhibit includes black and white photography of early cotton farming, an old steam whistle and a skein reel used for winding cotton. The exhibit runs through November 25, 2012.
On Friday, the Falling Rivers Gallery begins its Holiday Arts and Crafts Show. The theme of the show is “From our Hands to your House”, and it will run through December 22. Here you’ll find booths offering unique one-of-a-kind objects perfect for gifts for your friends and relatives, or just for yourself. Items include jewelry, holiday décor, cards, needlework, goat milk soap and beeswax candles, hand-painted scarves and pillows, functional pottery and much more. The Gallery itself is filled with art by local artists, so when you’ve checked out the Holiday Show take time to browse the permanent Gallery exhibit. This is the place to begin your Holiday shopping. Falling Rivers Gallery is on West Main Street, Albemarle, next door to Starnes Jewelers.
On Saturday the Friends of the Senior Center bring you their First Annual Arts and Crafts Fair. The event takes place at the Senior Center in Albemarle on Saturday, Nov. 17th from 8am until 5pm. Here you’re sure to find many more one-of-a-kind objects that are perfect for those special gifts for this holiday season.
Stanly County has many excellent artists and crafters and their offerings can be found at Holiday Shows and Arts and Craft Fairs throughout the community. By shopping locally you will find unique gifts and you will be supporting the locally economy.
If the crisp autumn weather makes you want to get out into the countryside after your shopping spree is over, there are scenic byways to explore in the rolling hills of our county. There are small communities to explore within the county and home-cooked food to try at one of the many mom and pop restaurants. Check out the local antique shops or galleries to look for that special treasure. Explore some of the county’s many parks. Visit the newly-renovated museum at Morrow Mountain. There’s always plenty to do and see in Stanly County.
