It’s Labor Day weekend and the children are back in school. Days are getting shorter and leaves are thinking about putting on their fall show. Farmers are still trucking in summer’s bounty and there’ll be plenty more good local produce to choose from throughout the autumn. As always here in Stanly County, there’s music in the air as a variety of musicians perform in outdoor venues.
Thursdays at the Station is the popular summer concert series hosted by the Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department at Market Station in downtown Albemarle. If you’ve never attended one of these concerts now is your chance. This will be the last one of the season. From 8 pm until 10 pm the bluegrass group, No1Uno (NO One You Know) will entertain. The concert is free. The concession stand is open. Bring a chair, settle back and enjoy some good music as we celebrate the end of summer.
On Friday, the music in the air is over at the historic Badin Inn. Pickin on the Porch features Eden’s Gate this Friday from 7 pm until 10 pm. There are comfortable seats to choose from on two wide porches and a breezeway, all within earshot of the music. The event is free, but the Inn’s pub will be happy to serve you with great food and drink to enhance your evening’s enjoyment.
Saturday is the time to grab your basket and head for the Stanly County Farmers’ Market. Located at Market Station in downtown Albemarle, the market is so much more than veggies. Oh, yes, there are plenty of those, fresh and locally grown, but check out the home-baked goodies, herbs, ornamental plants and flowers. Local artisans join the farmers with stalls of jewelry, stained glass, birdhouses, candles, pottery, homemade soaps and much more. All products are grown or produced within a 100 mile radius of Stanly County or they are a “Got to be NC” Certified product. Shopping here supports local farmers and artisans and the local economy. Fill that basket. On second thoughts, better bring two baskets.
Saturday evening brings more music at the Badin Inn. Pickin’ on the Porch features Carson Hill from 7 pm to 10 pm.
Next weekend there’ll be events going on that include a party at a vineyard, a 5K run and the big event of the fall season, Dancing with the Stars. You don’t want to miss this event are any of the others going on in and around Stanly County.
