Deck the halls. Christmas is nearly here. And it’s time to get out and admire all the glittering decorations throughout the county and to take in a festival of trees, a holiday craft show, breakfast with Santa, and choirs singing noel.
Begin your weekend with a visit to the Hospice Festival of Trees at Stanly County Commons. From December 3, 2012 through December 28, 2012, Hospice presents a display of over 50 uniquely and beautifully decorated trees, celebrating the holiday season. Hundreds of Stanly County residents view the trees each year. Many schools take field trips to give their children a chance to “ooh and aah” over the vast array of trees. Don’t miss this unique holiday attraction.
Start your Christmas shopping with a trip to the Falling Rivers Gallery Holiday Craft Show, From our Hands to Your Home. The show runs through December 22, 2012, giving you plenty of time yet to find unique, one-of-a-kind gifts made by local artists and crafts people. The Gallery is located on West Main Street in Albemarle, next door to Starnes Jewelers.
On Saturday at 9 am, Santa is coming to town and making a stop at the Stanly County Partnership for Children. Families will gather for Christmas music, crafts, storytelling, breakfast and a picture with Santa. All proceeds from the breakfast will go to Stanly County Partnership for Children and will help ensure that all children in our community enter school healthy and prepared to succeed.
Later on Saturday head over to the Rocky River Vineyards Open House between 1 pm and 6 pm. Don’t forget to bring your camera to take pictures with Santa. There’ll be cookies and juice for the children and mulled wine available for the adults. Look for gift baskets and other unique gifts from local artists and vendors. Come listen to Christmas music and join in Karaoke. Admission is free.
At 2 pm on Saturday the Stanly County Humane Society puts on its Santa Paws 5K running race in Albemarle. Find a sponsor and run/walk this holiday fund raiser for our four-legged friends.
For a grand finale to your weekend, head to the Agri-Civic Center where, at 3 pm the Singing Americans of Stanly County present Noel, a musical collection of Christmas moments. If this exceptional choir of local citizens can’t get you in the spirit of the season, nothing can. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
Stretch your weekend a little and take in the Albemarle Christmas Parade on Monday at 5:30 pm. Organized by the Albemarle Downtown Development Cooperation, the parade will begin on First Street in Albemarle at First Citizens Bank and will travel thought the downtown area ending at Charles Cannon Memorial Park across from the YMCA.
There’s no better place to find the holiday spirit than in and around the small communities that make up our county. From lights twinkling from a remote farm house to garlands draped across main streets, Stanly County beckons with promises of good will to all men.
