Tuesday, September 25, 2012 —
There are lots of activities to choose from this weekend in Stanly County, both indoor and outdoor. The fall weather is perfect for cruise-ins, movies in the park, the fair and for getting lost in the corn rows, while a pottery show and a grand concert will draw you indoors.
The Stanly Regional Agricultural Fair runs through Saturday, September 29, 2012 from 5 pm to 11 pm daily and from 3 pm to 11 pm on Saturday. Thursday is Food Drive Night and Senior Citizens Night, and Friday is College Night with the Shakedown Band on the Bank of Stanly stage and Figure 8 Races at the track. The Demolition Darby is on Saturday evening and the Kollections Band will be on the stage.
Friday and Saturday brings the annual Pottery Show and Sale to the Falling Rivers Gallery on West Main Street in Albemarle. Hours are 10 am to 5 pm. Meet our local Potters and learn about their work. The Gallery is also open weekly from Tuesday through Saturday. Opened in 2007, it has become the center of visual arts in Stanly County. A cooperative venture of the Stanly Arts Guild, it currently shows about 35 local artists and craftsmen offering everything from pottery, to gourds and from photography to watercolor.
Friday is the day for the monthly Oakboro Cruise-In & Burnout. Promoted as the largest Downtown Cruise-In in North Carolina, this Stanly County event brings in around 6,000 or so people and over 500 cars depending on the weather. The event starts at 5 pm. It’s a great time to see some very unique cars and trucks.
Saturday is Stanly County Farmers’ Market day. Grab your basket and hurry on down to Market Station in downtown Albemarle between 8 am and noon and take your pick of good locally grown produce, homemade goodies and crafts.
Later, head out to Muddy Boots Farm to have fun getting lost in the Get Lost Corn Maze. The Maze is open from 11 am to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday. The address is 20935 NC 73 Highway, Albemarle (in Millingport between Albemarle and Mount Pleasant). Try to find your way through over 2 miles of right and wrong paths in over 7.5 acres of corn. Here you’ll also find a picnic shelter, a pumpkin patch where you can pick your own pumpkin, a corn pit and other activities. And don’t forget to get ready for the Maze of Terror on October 6, 2012.
There’s more fun to be had in Stanfield where the Stanfield Motor Cycle Cruise-in takes place between 4 pm and 9 pm. There’s fun, food and more. All motorcycles are welcome. The event takes place every month from April to September, so this is the last one for the season. Don’t miss it.
On Saturday night at the Agri-Civic Center, the Stanly County Concert Association presents David Holt and Josh Goforth & the Lightning Bolts. The concert begins at 7:30 pm. David introduces his audiences to the rhythm instruments of long-ago—bones, spoons, stump-fiddle, jaw harp, hambone, even the paper bag. Add the virtuosic sounds of guitar, banjo, fiddle, slide guitar and mandolin, and it’s an evening of unforgettable traditional, folk, spiritual, and mountain music that crosses cultures and centuries. The show explodes with creative energy, extraordinary talent and a lot of fun.
Back in the great outdoors on this Saturday night, Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department presents Movies in the Park at the City Lake Amphitheater. Playing this week is “Artificial Intelligence” The event is free. Movies start at dusk, usually about 8 pm.
Enjoy your weekend and stayed tuned because there’s lots more fun coming up next weekend.
