North Carolina could be on the verge of surpassing the number of early votes cast in 2008.
The votes are already being cast in Election 2012 as voters in Stanly County help to choose a new president, governor and several state and local offices.
One-stop early voting began Thursday morning at the Stanly Commons.
More than 500 county voters had cast their ballots by noon and election officials reported a total of 929 that had voted by day’s end.
According to state election officials, Thursday’s state-wide turnout surpassed the 2008 first-day count of 117,372. However, the official numbers were not yet available.
More than 2.4 million North Carolinians cast early ballots in the 2008 election.
Kimberly Wilson, Stanly County elections director, said the first day did prove to be a busy one.
Although she did not have numbers immediately ac-cessible to compare to 2008’s totals, she said it appears Stanly County is following the state in the large turnout.
“It was busy all day,” Wilson said.
“I can’t say for sure, but my gut tells me we are having a larger turnout.”
She added that everything had gone well for the first day and gave credit to the precinct workers who are assisting voters as they enter the polling place.
“They have been magnificent,” Wilson said.
“We’d be dead in the water without them.”
It will continue at that location through Nov. 2 during the hours of 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
On Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, early voting will be available from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The three satellite locations will begin their operations on Oct. 27 from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Those locations are the New London Community Building in New London; the Stanly Community Col-lege Crutchfield Campus, Room 138, in Locust; and the Norwood Community Building in Norwood.
They will also have the same Saturday hours Nov. 3 and will also be open Mondays through Fridays from Oct. 29-Nov. 2 from 1-7 p.m.
