This is a quiet weekend in Stanly County as far as planned activities go, but there’s always something to do and enjoy around here. The leaves are beginning to turn and a great place to see the transition is on the road to the top of Morrow Mountain in Morrow Mountain State Park. As you climb the winding road to the top you can see the difference in colors. And, of course, once you reach the top the view is spectacular.
Our county has several Scenic Byways and this is a good time of the year to take a leisurely ride along them to admire the hills and dales and rolling farmland that characterizes our countryside.
In town, in the county seat of Albemarle, there’s always something to see and do. There are several great eating places in the heart of downtown with everything from pizza to gourmet entrees to good old-fashioned hamburgers.
This week and next week check out the Stanly Arts Guild member show at Falling Rivers Gallery on West Main Street (next door to Starnes Jewelers). It’s full of art by local artists and your visit can be a preview for your Christmas shopping.
Now for some of those planned activities. The City of Locust hosts a monthly Concert Series and Cruise-In in their beautiful downtown. This Friday, October 19th, the band “Too Much Sylvia” will perform. All performances start at 6 pm. The Locust Cruise-In starts at 5 pm in the Locust Town Center. The concert series and Cruise In is a great time to get outside and enjoy wonderful music and unique cars in a beautiful setting.
On Saturday, the Stanly County Farmers’ Market gets an early start at 8 am and goes on until noon. Come and choose some delicious fall veggies to take home for your weekend eating pleasure. And check out the stalls full of crafts, plants and home-made goodies. Next week will see the grand finale of this season’s market. Stay tuned to hear all about it.
The Get Lost Corn Maze at Muddy Boots Farm on Highway 73 between Millingport and Mount Pleasant is in high gear this weekend. The corn maze provides 2 miles of right and wrong turns during the day and the Maze of Terror keeps you scared to death in the evenings. Later this month, with a full moon scheduled for Halloween, this is the place to be. For a little less strenuous fun there’s a corn hole game, a sunflower patch, a pumpkin patch and a play area.
Enjoy these lovely fall days as the leaves begin to glow, the moon gets brighter every night and the temperatures settle to a comfortable level.
