Tuesday, July 21, 2009 — Ervin Michael Edgerton of Albemarle was recently named to the N.C. Community Action Association Hall of Fame, honoring his 26 years of service to the Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency.
A former Head Start teacher who is currently manager of the agency’s Transportation department, Edgerton is a hero in the eyes of the hundreds of disadvantaged people his efforts have helped over the years, said Sharon C. Goodson, executive director of the N.C. Community Action Association.
“We applaud his commitment to making life better for the elderly, children and the families we serve,” said Goodson.
The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to Community Action Agencies, which are private non-profit organizations that empower low-income families through a variety of programs, from affordable housing and Head Start to home weatherization and senior services.
Edgerton started with the Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency in 1983 abd during his tenure, he became a head start teacher, lead teacher at Price Center, disability coordinator, head start assistant director and is presently working as a unit manager, responsible for transportation.
While working with the SRCAA, Edgerton had many accomplishments.
He initiated the Male Involvement Program, and wrote the first grant for this program.
Edgerton organized basketball tournaments for the men and organized family day at Livingstone College as a means of helping the men to become more aware of their role in the development of their children.
He also assisted in the writing of the Early Head Start Grant. He was on the Smart Start Board, Child Protection Team, and Coordinator for transportation for the National Youth Sports Program at Livingstone College, Dunbar Center and the Cypress House Summer Program for Youth in Moore County.
Twenty-two other North Carolinians were also inducted into the Hall during a recent ceremony in Raleigh.
